Reviving Tradition with Puro Tepache: A Conversation with Ralph Hernandez the owner of Resurrection Body Shop
At Puro Tepache, we love hearing the personal stories behind our drink. We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Ralph Hernandez, a dedicated craftsman from Resurrection Body Shop, to discuss his thoughts on Puro Tepache and the special memories it brings up for him. Ralph shared how tepache has been a part of his family’s traditions and how Puro Tepache keeps those memories alive.
What do you think of Puro Tepache?
"The first thing that comes to mind is how refreshing it is," Ralph said. "I like it—it has a light cinnamon flavor to it, and of course, the pineapple. The two flavors just complement one another so well."
What does it remind you of?
For Ralph, the flavors of Puro Tepache evoke fond memories from his childhood. "Puro Tepache reminds me of when I used to go to Rosita, Coahuila, with my dad. There was always a street vendor selling tepache, and the taste takes me back to those days."
Do you remember how your family used to make it?
"I remember my mom making tepache with the peels of the pineapple and piloncillo," Ralph recalled. "She would let it ferment in a glass jar. It was a simple process, but it made something really special." Tepache is often made with humble ingredients, but the results have lasting impact.
Where was your family from?
"My mom is from San Luis Potosí, and my dad was from Rosita, Coahuila," Ralph shared. "Tepache was something we enjoyed as part of our roots, and both sides of my family had strong ties to their traditions." For Ralph, Puro Tepache brings those regional flavors and memories into the present.
Tell us about the first time you had tepache.
Ralph smiled as he reminisced. "The first memory of having tepache was when my mom made it. I was probably like 5 years old. I still remember it to this day—it’s one of those flavors that sticks with you."
What would you tell those who haven’t tried it yet?
For those unfamiliar with the drink, Ralph encourages them to give it a shot. "I would tell them to try it. It's refreshing on its own, but it also goes well with adult beverages if you want to mix things up."
What does "Puro" mean to you?
To Ralph, "Puro" represents more than just a name—it's about tradition. "Puro Tepache keeps the tradition of tepache alive," he said. "It's a way to honor where we come from while enjoying something refreshing today."
At Puro Tepache, we're not just about crafting a great drink. We believe in the importance of supporting our community, celebrating our culture, and preserving our traditions. Ralph's story is a reminder of why it’s essential to uplift the people and the heritage that shape us. By embracing these roots, we can ensure that future generations continue to enjoy the richness of our history, one sip at a time.
