From the Streets to the Ring: Eddie Ortiz's Journey and Upcoming Fight

Boxing has been a transformative force in my life, a journey that began when I was 18, just turning 19. Growing up, I always had a passion for the sport, but my parents were hesitant to let me pursue it. That changed when my best friend and future trainer, Artemis, introduced me to the Zarzamora Street Gym. It was there that Tony Ayala Sr., a legendary figure in the boxing community, saw potential in me and generously offered his guidance and wisdom for free. The gym quickly became my second home, and the people in it became my family.

From the very beginning, my parents, Javier Ortiz and Cynthia Ayala, have been by my side. My dad has been my biggest supporter, cheering me on through every victory and picking me up after every loss. My mom has been a steadfast presence, offering her love and encouragement. Their unwavering support and belief in me have been a constant source of strength. Alongside them, my coach, Marcos, has been instrumental in honing my skills and strategy. Their presence in my corner gives me the confidence to face any challenge in the ring.

I remember the sting of losing my first amateur fight, but that loss fueled my determination. I went on to win two regional Golden Gloves titles, one state Golden Gloves title, the Oxnard PAL National Title, an international bout against Finland, and the USA National Title, which earned me the #1 seed in the 2015 Olympic trials. These accomplishments were the result of relentless training and the unwavering support of my gym family.

In 2016, I turned professional with a first-round knockout, setting the stage for an exciting career. Today, my record stands at 13-1-2, highlighted by winning the WBC USNBC Silver title. I've had the privilege of fighting on national TV twice and am thrilled to announce my third appearance on August 31, 2024, on UFC Fight Pass. This upcoming fight is a chance to showcase my skills and dedication, and I can't wait to step into the ring once again.

Beyond the accolades and the thrill of competition, boxing has been my lifesaver. Before I found the gym, I was on a dangerous path, caught up in drugs and the streets. Boxing gave me purpose, discipline, and a way out. Now, I'm committed to paying forward the blessings I've received. I love mentoring the young fighters at the gym, sharing advice and coaching them to navigate the challenges of life both inside and outside the ring.

I'm excited to share that I'm working on opening my own nonprofit gym, Blacktop Boxing LLC and EO Boxing, in remembrance of Tony Sr. and the Zarzamora Street Gym. My goal is to provide a safe haven I want to honor the legacy of Tony Sr. by continuing to make a positive impact in our community, offering a haven where young people can grow, learn, and find their strength.

In partnership with Puro Tepache, a brand dedicated to celebrating and supporting our local community, I'm looking forward to making a positive impact. Puro Tepache embodies the spirit of inclusivity and cultural pride, and their commitment to the community aligns perfectly with my vision. Together, we're working to uplift and inspire the next generation.

I invite everyone to join us in this journey. Tune in to UFC Fight Pass on August 31 to watch my upcoming fight. Your support means the world to me, and it fuels my mission to give back. Let's continue to celebrate our culture, support each other, and make a difference in our community—one punch at a time.
