Celebrating 10 years of Rhythm: How Puro Tepache helped fuel the beats for a Volcan celebration to remember

I’ll be honest, I’m not that in tune with the local music scene and really don’t follow the national music trends. But what I do know is that I love a good cumbia! Cumbia is the only music I actually know how to dance. I grew up with two parents who could really dance a cumbia. We lived next door to my godmother who had a large family including 4 women. And I had to learn how to dance a cumbia.

My favorite cumbia band growing up was La Sonora Dinamita with songs like “A Mover La Colita”, “La Cadenita”, and “Capullo y Sorullo” are always my favorites. Fito Olivares is another singer I loved to listen to and always laugh when I hear the “Cholesterol” song. And growing up to Selena, who doesn’t love “Baila esta Cumbia”!

So when we were messaged about potentially helping Volcan celebrate their 10 year anniversary, we jumped on it. But what sealed the deal was looking their music up on YouTube and Spotify. Their rhythms and playing style was popping and left me telling everyone I could about them. I felt embarrassed that I hadn’t listened to them before. We met with Stephanie Thornton of the band and instantly meshed with her and what Volcan strives for: bringing traditional cultural sounds to a new generation.

That mission absolutely resonated with us at Puro Tepache. It’s the musical equivalence to what we are trying to do with Puro Tepache—bringing cultural tradition to new generations so that we preserve and celebrate our history and shared legacy, show people that there is pride in our past but also direction in our future, and to be change agents for our community.

September 26th was an amazing night. Three great bands but the most amazing part was the one we got to celebrate: Volcan’s set. They had everything from slow and fast beats, to original music that just made us want to dance. I stood in awe of the big band’s power as they performed with flavor and flare.

And when they used Puro Tepache in one of their songs, the only feeling I had was pride. Pride in seeing a unique San Antonio musician holding a uniquely crafted beverage. Pride in knowing we could partner with amazing musicians. Pride in being able to share our Tepache with the people who walked in and heard their feedback of our product. ¡Orgulloso por toda la noche!

Thank you Volcan for letting us be a part of your special night. To many more years to come! And know you have a fan and supporter for life!
